TRADING STATEMENT FOR 52 WEEKS TO 30 JUNE 2003
Woolworths operating group increased sales by 15.4% in the 52 weeks to 30 June
2003 compared to the 53 week period last year. Sales from comparable stores
grew by 12.3% against last year. The impact of the additional week last year on
all the Woolworths figures is approximately 1.9% over the year and 3.8% in the
second half of the year.
Clothing and home sales grew by 11.6% against last year and 10.2% in comparable
South African stores. Ladieswear and lingerie continued to perform well despite
the late winter, while home and childrenswear performed below expectations.
Food sales increased by 20.6% against last year and 14.7% in comparable South
African stores. Despite sales in the final quarter being lower than the third
quarter, both divisions gained market share in the year.
Trading conditions in the second half in Australia remained very competitive
with considerable discounting and promotional activity from major department
stores. Country Road sales from continuing operations, in Australian dollar
terms, for the year ended 30 June 2003 are expected to be flat on the same
period last year. (52 weeks vs. 52 weeks)
Woolworths Holdings Limited's annual results for the year ended 30 June 2003 are
scheduled to be announced on 21 August 2003.
